This website displays images from the exhibition of photographs by professional photographer Michael Sleigh held at the Guildford Institute in January 2020, showing the range and variety of bargeboards that can be seen in Guildford.
The original idea for the project came from the editor of the Guildford Society Newsletter who suggested that a photographic record of examples of bargeboards would make an interesting article, this appeared in the Society’s Newsletter at the end of 2015.
From December 2014 to February 2015 examples were found and photographed by exploring every road in the centre of Guildford. The greatest concentration and the best examples are in the London Road, Waterden Road, Epsom Road triangle, but others can be found along many other roads around the town, usually on houses dating from the 1860s until the 1900s.
Over 80 individual and unique designs have been recorded with 60 of them being displayed in the exhibition. The project continues as new examples are discovered around Guildford. Other interesting architectural details on houses in the area have also been photographed, a selection are shown on this website.
Michael Sleigh is the owner and photographer at Guildford based Polypodphoto, he also gives talks on photography and organizes ‘PhotoWalks’, as well as delivering courses at the institute on Photography and Architecture, specializing in Victorian Neo-Gothic, Churches and Church Stained Glass.
